My own onetime garden: created from derelict ground and buildings, a slight slope was levelled to give us a terrace walkway from the restored summerhouse to the entrance to the walled kitchen garden. The slope between the two levels was planted with yew. Glazed bricks salvaged from the ruined stables made steps and terrace, while gravel and salvaged cobblestones made the main approach path. The parterre was planted with plants available in Scotland in 1700, and the design was based on paintings of the garden at Yester House. The Bacchus we found in fragments in the undergrowth and had repaired. He still peers through the vegetation of my present garden. The iris next to him is the marvellously perfume Iris florentina. |
